The thought of family travel by any means with babies and toddlers sounds daunting and stressful for Parents.
As working parents, we want to find time to go on holiday with the family.
However some mums and dads are terrified of travelling with their little ones as they are not confident they can keep their children happy and occupied for hours or handle tiredness or tantrum throwing.
Family Travel with a baby or toddler could be fun but hectic if not planned out properly.
I have travelled by air a few times with Bionic without her dad, so I have first hand experience travelling with her as a baby and then as a toddler.
When she was a baby, I was armed with research and thankfully she was a very easy baby to travel with. However when she was 14 months and very active I had an eventful experience travelling her.
She threw endless tantrums at the airport, drawing unnecessary attention to us. At one point a nice man who saw me at my wits end offered to take her for a bit to first class where he was sitting. I was more than happy to hand my baby over to a stranger!
After I calmed down, I felt very morose and suddenly scared for my daughter’s life. How could I give my precious baby to someone I didn’t know? I mean, who does that??? I will not bore you with tales of failure to be a super mum but that flight was very eventful for me and I vowed never ever to travel with her without her dad.
When she was two and a half years old, we took a family trip and this time I was more prepared and in charge! Now, whose the man??…I mean mum! ;o)
Now, I can’t guarantee that your baby or toddler will not have their moments; these family travel tips I will provide you, would help get you more prepared and keep everyone in a better mood. Whether you have one child or more, it doesn’t matter. You can still apply these tips.
The tips I will share now are on travelling by air. I am assuming that this is your first time travelling so I will be as detailed as possible.
It is always better and easier to travel with your spouse or someone else, that way one person can be in charge of the children and the other the luggage. However you may find yourself travelling alone with your children. So in the tips I would be sharing, I have mostly assumed the worst-case scenario that you are travelling alone with your child.
