Last time on the blog, we looked at 5 tasks to outsource in your business. If you haven’t read it then check it out here. Today, we are going to look at 5 chores you should outsource at home so that you can free up your time.
Overwhelm is one thing a lot of mothers struggle with and this is because you are trying to do everything. You can’t go far by doing every single chore at home.
There is this myth that a good woman must be on top of all her chores and is lazy if she gets others to do her chores. Not in my world. Personally I do not like chores and would rather spend that time doing what I love, like spending time with my family, relaxing or working on my business.
Like I always say, what makes you a super working mum is knowing what and when to delegate.
5 chores to outsource to free up your time
Sure not everyone will agree with the list I am going to share below, but these are 5 things I outsource and I think every mum should consider outsourcing so that she can spend her time on more important things such as spending time with her family
Cleaning
Anytime I talk to my clients on a strategy call and we try to pinpoint the source of their tiredness and overwhelmed, 80% of the time, one of the first things that come up is the time spent on cleaning. I always recommend to them to get a cleaner to come in at least once a week. My clients always come back to say what significant difference getting a cleaner has done for them. They are less stressed and get to spend that time cleaning on other things like homework with children or working on their business.
The amount you pay a cleaner to clean your house is small compare to what you gain in return.
You may enjoy cleaning and can’t justify outsourcing cleaning but think about the time you spend cleaning your home, after work or on a weekend. By outsourcing your cleaning, you could be spending that time investing in relationships instead or sleeping.
Ironing/Laundry
Another thing right on top of my list is ironing. This is one to share with family members or pay someone to do.
If your husband loves to iron, get him to do the ironing, or better still outsource.
Most cleaners who come in will happily do your ironing and laundry as well. If you want to spend less (as most cleaners charge per hour), you can do the washing before the cleaner comes in and they iron, fold and put on hangers.
Lawn work
I cannot mow the lawn to save my life, so this is another chore the hubby helps out with. I think he finds it therapeutic actually. However sometimes he also gets busy so we get someone to come mow the lawn for us. We don’t have to do this often anyway.
Grocery shopping
This is one of the things I outsourced long time ago by moving to online shopping. Well technically I still have to select what I want by doing my grocery shopping online however I save so much time by not going into the store, browsing the aisle with two active children.
The stress I experience especially with two children in tow after a day at the stores is worth the small delivery price I pay Tescos or Asda to deliver my shopping to me at home.
I have not had any issues with the items delivered, as they are usually fresh.
Click here to check out this post where I share how I use mysupermarket.com to do my monthly shopping.
Doing grocery shopping online may not be available to you depending on where you live, but if it is, you should consider doing it and see if it makes any difference to you.
I have not tried this yet (though I shop from Amazon a lot) but you can make use of the Amazon subscribe and save service where you can subscribe to receive items you need at home on a regular basis e.g. nappies
Cooking
I know someone reading this is probably gasping: how can you add cooking to the list?? Well I can, because I can almost bet that there are days you do not have the energy to cook or to meal plan, there are days you are tired of eating your own food, and there are moments you just need a break from everyday cooking. And it is at these moments that you outsource your cooking.
Nowadays, you can get a local caterer to do some bulk cooking for you, which you put in the freezer and bring out when you need. This is what I do when I need to outsource my cooking.
You could even use some services that will deliver recipes and boxes of food items to your home and all you do is cook. Some companies will send you Freshly-Made Home Delivered Meals to your home for those who want to lose weight or stay healthy.
I am unable to recommend any companies that provide this service as I have never used any but want you to know that these options are available to you if you decide to go this route.
So there you go that’s my list of 5 chores to outsource. I know after reading this list you may still feel guilty about outsourcing chores in your home but I have found it works for me. It frees up my time, I am not overwhelmed, I don’t have to worry about multitasking when spending time with my family.
Why feel guilty about outsourcing chores when I can spend that time doing something else. The amount of money I spend on outsourcing is little compared to the time I save and my sanity level. In fact, this is a drive for me to make more money in my business so I can pay for outsourcing.
So SWM, have a think and see what chores you can outsource in your home today. I know it might be tight financially so realistically see what you can do or where you can save on so you can spend that money outsourcing. It will be worth it.
So what chores do you currently outsource in your home? If you don’t, why not? Will you consider anything on my list above?

Thank you for this. It is very timely for me. I sure do need to outsource, especially the cleaning and ironing. Now the next step is to get this worked into my budget. 🙂
you will be surprised what difference it will make and how much money you will probably make when you focus your time on your brilliant zone and not on cleaning and ironing… let’s know how you get on 🙂 @disqus_boxri4CsVJ:disqus
I like this. Thanks for sharing Aloted. I have to start thinking about what else I can outsource. I already outsourced cleaning (minus my room and toilet), ironing of my shirts ( I need to add my skirts and blouses), etc.
nice one @disqus_WxqKGsArCb:disqus. I am sure you can find a few more things to outsource 🙂
I have already done most of this! Sometimes I’ll batch cook and freeze so have meals available. So many women still want to do the supermarket shop. It’s such an unnecessary time stealer and with kids, can be really stressful!
well done for outsourcing!
i agree,,,not sure how mothers do the browsing in shops with kids.. beats me! @yvetteankrah:disqus
I love this series! Hope you keep sharing such useful tips!
I will do my best to bring more useful tips. Thank you @drmichellebengtson:disqus
Love this. I like the recommendations made. I will definitely consider the cleaning service as that will help free up some of my time. Thank you so much for a well scripted article
Glad you found this useful..lets know how you get on with outsourcing your cleaning 🙂 @tabithavinson:disqus
Thanks Aloted.
I have already outsourced four and occasionally cooking.
I cannot compromise my ‘me time’ even if its just to catch up on blogs, just as am doing.
Thanks for sharing, always inspiring.
I didn’t expect anything less from a super working mum like you @AjiMichael:disqus. Well done!
Great tips, Aloted. I have been thinking about this considering I work full-time plus want to write more books, keep up with my blog and create some other products. Sometimes just thinking about the to-dos is exhausting. Thanks. 🙂
Please consider moving from the thinking stage to the action stage when it comes to outsourcing,,that way you will be able to accomplish the amazing dream of writing more books etc 🙂 @pamelacarmichael:disqus
This is so very practical. Thanks for this.
You are welcome @amyhagerup:disqus
I would love to outsource my cleaning and laundry. That’s a big goal that I’m working towards. My house is a wreck and very cluttered because I’m too busy homeschooling and working to deal with it, and my husband doesn’t help that much. So. I need to make more money so that I can hire an organizer to deal with the mess and then a housekeeper to keep up with the organizer’s work!
Interesting list… my husband happily does 2 of the 5, I’m happy with the other 2, but I believe we should be outsourcing our gardening. We do occasionally, but my husband insists on doing it, but never has the time to get round to it. Thanks for sharing.
